WOMEN IN GAMING:
AN EXPLORATION
UNIVERSITY // 2019
SKILLS: User Research // Prototyping // Mockups // Animation // Presentation
TOOLS: InDesign // Photoshop // Illustrator // AfterEffects // Premiere Pro
As part of my final year of university, I undertook a year full of researching, synthesizing, and revolving around the topic of gaming which is a passion of mine.
Online multiplayer video games have reporting systems in place that allow players to report poor behavior. They intend to encourage social good between gamers, so they have an enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, some women feel dissatisfied and fearful of playing online, as 51.84% of women have experienced gender-based harassment. Therefore, reporting systems need improving, so they create equal, safer environments for everyone. Even though there are successful reporting systems out there, there is an opportunity to make a noticeable change.
I’ve created set content within a skeleton design that can be implemented into any existing online video game. The solution acts as a proposal for video game companies to increase their user base and create further trust between the company and the gamer. I’m encouraging positive social interactions for all genders to help inspire people to stand up against the negativity. Everyone needs to be aware of potential harassment, so if they see something, then say something.
